What is an ENT examination?

Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the ear, throat, nose, head, and neck. During an ENT examination, an otolaryngologist evaluates the health of these areas and identifies potential problems.

When is it necessary to undergo an ENT examination?

ENT examinations are recommended for individuals who experience:

• Problems with the nose and sinuses: frequent colds, runny nose, blocked nose, reduced sense of smell, frequent nosebleeds, sneezing, snoring, headaches, acute and chronic sinus infections.
• Throat issues: burning and/or tightness in the throat, sore throat, acute and chronic throat infections, reduced sense of taste, bad breath, chronic and acute tonsil diseases, growths and swelling in the oral cavity.

What does an ENT examination include?

• Examination of the oral cavity and pharynx to assess the condition of teeth, tongue, tonsils, palate, and other structures in the oral cavity.
• Examination of the ear to assess the condition of the ear, ear canal, and eardrum.
• Examination of the nose to assess the patency of the nasal passages, condition of the nasal mucosa, and the nasal septum.
• Indirect laryngoscopy or mirror examination if necessary to assess the condition of the vocal cords and other structures of the pharynx and larynx.
• Examination of the neck to palpate the lymph nodes and structures of the neck (glands and muscles) and identify any changes in them.
